Ram and Annular Blowout Preventers,
Remote Chokes and Gate Valves
Five-Day Course
(WEST DEC Facility, Brookshire, Texas)

Course Description
This five-day course provides instruction on the operation and maintenance of ram and annular blowout preventers (BOPs), as well as remote chokes and gate valves.  It focuses on the design, operation, and maintenance of the hydraulic and mechanical aspects of these subsea or land-based systems.  This course utilizes an operational Hydril ram - including the multi-position locking system (MPL) - and a Hydril annular blowout preventer, a SWACO remote choke system, subsea valves, and manual gate valves; to provide a realistic operational environment for exercises that will enhance the student’s ability to maintain and troubleshoot these systems.
Student Performance Objectives
Learn about the operation, maintenance and inspection of the major components of typical ram and annular BOPs, remote chokes and gate valves. Students will learn component-level repair and inspection of these systems.  The course also emphasizes report writing skills for efficient communication on the job.  Students will be tested at the beginning and end of the class.

Who Should Attend
Company men and others working in the drilling industry that would benefit from a course in these systems.  Both the men on the rig as well as supporting engineers and managers will benefit.
Rig mechanics, subsea engineers and senior subsea engineers that would benefit from an in-depth knowledge of these systems, including the associated drillers panel controls, control pod systems and remote choke controls.
Drillers and toolpushers who need a working knowledge of this equipment.

Provider/Delivery Method
Engineer-led/40% classroom with Powerpoint presentations and 60% lab exercises.

Prerequisites
The course is presented with the perspective of an entry-level rig technician.  It is expected that the student has proficiency in measurement, inspection, fasteners and torque application tools and methods.  WEST’s Symbols, Schematics and Troubleshooting course is recommended, to provide familiarization with ANSI symbol standards that apply to all equipment.

About This West Training Course
This WEST training course features a mix of classroom instruction and lab exercises.  During lab sessions, the classroom training is reinforced by practicing techniques on actual drilling equipment, including an operational ram-type blowout preventer, an annular-type blowout preventer, and a remote choke system.  For engineers, this training experience in a controlled environment enhances practical experience.  As an added bonus, students will receive reference materials to take with them after the course for their own use.  The classroom training will be conducted during morning sessions; followed by afternoon lab sessions where the student will work with actual components found on drilling rigs.  Students will be tested for subject knowledge at entry and exit from the course.  Students will be required to troubleshoot an actual hardware problem and write a report to demonstrate competence.

Classes are limited to a maximum size of 15 students.  Lab exercises are done in groups with maximum of 5 students each, to ensure that each student has adequate time with the equipment.

Note:  Students are required to provide their own steel-toed work boots and coveralls.  WEST will supply any additional PPE required; such as safety glasses, face shields, and ear plugs, in addition to all tools and training materials.
